The concept of a Shakespearean Garden was first developed in Victorian England with the idea of creating a garden with some or all, of the trees and flowers mentioned in the bard’s works. With strong links to the suffrage movement and Edwardian Manchester society our garden opened in 1922 and was rescued from near obscurity over 3yrs by volunteers. Few public Shakespearean Gardens remain in the UK.
Set within Platt Fields Park, this sunken, walled garden is in a glorious, secluded spot; a real life secret garden. The garden is laid out in 4 rectangular quadrants with neat paths delineating each area; a simple Elizabethan knot garden mostly planted with native species; a performance area with human sun clock, a veg & apple tree section and a lawned area entered via 2 clipped, hornbeam arches.
Come and learn about the history of our garden and try the human sun clock. Made of Portland stone this has only recently been installed. A Shakespearean Garden is, in itself, of historical interest - there are not many public Shakespearean Gardens left in the UK.
